No, I ain’t no Alicia Keys and this ain’t no “no makeup movement.” Kudos to Miss Keys for wanting to be free and all, but a movement? Really? Girl, it ain’t that serious lol! I love my makeup free face, but I have fun being made up too! Because I enjoy my makeup, I make sure to take care of my skin. I address my skin type  in order to have the best skin that nature will allow me. She’s been kind thus far!

I’m sharing this post, because the one thing I get asked the most, is about skincare. You guys always want to know how I care for my skin, and how at my age, do I stay wrinkle free. Although I do take decent care of my skin and have for years now, I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that heredity plays its part in this as well.  I don’t want you thinking that you can run out and buy some miracle product that’s going to miraculously “fix” your skin.  What I will say, is that with some type of skin care regimen, you can help to preserve your skin.  Now, if you have the moolah, there are definitely certain types of skin procedures you can have done to help with the appearance of wrinkles, scars, texture and firmness, but for us regular folks, there’s Sephora, Target and Walgreens, where you can buy affordable products to help get your skin together. Also, I’m going to give you a few tips that I use that may be of service to you.

1. Don’t sleep in makeup!  I’ve done it more than a few times and each time it leaves dark circles under my eyes.  You don’t want all that stuff clogging up your pores for an entire 24 hours or more.  It’s just not sanitary!  No bueno!

2. Adopt a skincare regimen for your skin type. I happen to have normal skin with an oily t-zone.  Don’t just start buying products because it works for so-and-so.  You have to find out what skin type you have and purchase quality products that work for your particular skin type! Did you read that guys—”quality” products! Read labels and do a little research!  I pretty much stick to my tried and true skincare products. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Right now, I’m loving what brands like Kiehl’s, Boscia, Biossance and Glam Glow have to offer.  Those are my fantastic 4 right there! Although these brands have been great for my skin, you have to find out what works for you.  Also, I don’t care what skin type you have, you need to be moisturizing! Even if you have oily skin, there are moisturizers formulated for oily skin. Google it if you don’t believe me! I moisturize day and night without fail! Below, is the skincare regimen  I follow.  I switch up the products from time to time, but the regimen pretty much stays the same.


3.  Be gentle with your skin.  There are a lot of tools out here, where you are instructed to scrub your face abrasively.  Don’t fall for it!  You don’t have to torture your skin to cleanliness.  Cleansers are designed to attach to dirt, making it easy to dissolve and remove it. Use something soft like a Konjac sponge or your hands and always wash and apply things to your face in an upward, circular motion. This will promote circulation and help with properly feeding the product to your skin.

4.  Protect your skin from the sun.  If sunscreen isn’t your thing, then wear a hat or something.  You can’t just allow the sun to cook and bake you,  and think that no damage will occur.  That goes for my melanated ladies too!  We all need to protect our skin from the sun. Not only is cancer a factor, but too much sun exposure can prematurely age us. Don’t forget to always wear sunglasses too!  You have to protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes.

I’m no doctor, so if you’re concerned about your skin, you should definitely seek a dermatologist. I’m just sharing what works for me, and that’s pretty much all I have! Nothing magical, just a little bit of heredity and decent skincare. I say decent, because I  don’t go overboard with it. I keep it simple and try to remember to do a face mask when I can. I forgot to mention that I drink a lot of water too. I’m not sure if that’s a factor or not, but they say it helps with overall health, so why not?!
